Abstract
Objective: This study is designed to compare the analgesic effect between horizontal therapy and interferential current therapy.

Method: Twenty-five healthy men (mean age 27.2?3.6) with no history of chronic pain, neurological abnormality or any psychologic problems were selected. Horizontal therapy and interferential current therapy were applied to the left forearm (3 cm proximal to the wrist, on the surface of the extensor digitorum tendon) for 20 minutes. Each treatment was given on different days. Pain threshold was measured by the pressure algometer, electrical stimulation and VAS (visual analogue scale). These were checked before treatment, immediately following treatment and 5 minutes after cessation of treatment.

Results: Comparison of pain thresholds before and after treatment revealed a significant increase in pressure and electrical pain threshold (p£¼0.05), but no significant difference in VAS (p£¾0.05). We found a more significant increment (p£¼0.05) of electrical pain threshold immediately after horizontal therapy compared with interferential therapy.

Conclusion: Pain threshold increases significantly after both horizontal therapy and interferential current therapy. Horizontal therapy be as effective as interferential therapy in pain management.
